The 2nd Workshop on advanced Technologies for Smarter Assisted Living solutions: Towards an open Smart Home infrastructure (SmarterAAL'19)

Download CFP: PDF

The challenge to the rapid development and deployment of Smart Home (SH) solutions essentially arises from the technology complexity and application diversity of the SH field. To be successful any SH solution requires seamless technology integration and inputs from multiple subject areas. Researchers working in different technological disciplines usually have little understanding and appreciation of each other’s research issues. This leads to fragmented self-contained technologies, which are not suitable to serve as an integral part of a technology infrastructure to solve “bigger” complex problems. SH accommodates a wide range of applications, and each of them may require different sensors, data processing methods and intervention mechanisms. The current technology infrastructures are usually ad hoc, i.e., domain dependent, application specific, difficult to be applied to solve problems of a different application characteristic. This suggests that an alternative to a one-size-fits-all approach to develop SH technology infrastructure is needed in order to advance the state of the art. In addition to mutidisciplinarity and application heterogeneity, SH is also a field involving multiple stakeholders. Any best practices should be built upon effective communication and sharing of knowledge, and consensus of views and needs between stakeholders in the value chain.

Themes & Topics

This workshop, the 2nd International Workshop on Advanced Technologies for Smarter Assisted Living solutions: Towards an open Smart Home infrastructure (SmarterAAL'19), will be held in conjunction with the 2019 IEEE Smart World Congress (SWC2019). The main themes of the workshop will be: (1) Sensing and Monitoring Technologies; (2) Context Interference and Behaviour Analysis; (3) Personalisation and Adaptive Interaction, and (4) Open Smart Home and Service Infrastructures. It offers a killer application for pervasive computing technologies, demonstrating and inspiring researchers in pervasive computing community how fundamental theories, models, algorithms can be exploited to solve real-world problems, thus impacting the society and economy. It provides an international forum for researchers and practitioners to exchange their original research results, identify future research problems, and report the current best practices in industry. The workshop welcomes submissions that cover, but are not limited to, the following topics:

•   assisted living solutions
•   SH user needs and system requirements
•   sensing and monitoring
•   sensor networks
•   context awareness
•   activity recognition
•   behaviour analysis
•   user-centred design and ethics
•   human machine interaction
•   personalised and adaptive interactions
•   open SH infrastructures and toolsets
•   virtual reality
•   wearables
•   security and privacy

Submission

Authors are invited to submit original, unpublished research papers as well as industrial practice papers. Simultaneous submissions to other publications or conferences are not permitted.

The length of the camera-ready of an accepted paper will be limited to 6 pages (IEEE Proceedings style) with up to two additional pages (with charges for each of the additional pages), and printed on 10-12 point fonts. The authors must follow the IEEE Computer Society Press Proceedings Author Guidelines to prepare your papers. At least one of the authors of each accepted paper is required to pay full registration fee and present the paper at the workshop. Arrangements are being made to publish selected accepted papers in reputable journals. The submissions must be in PDF, Postscript, or RTF format.

Submit panel proposals in plain text via email to Dr. Feng Chen at fengchen@dmu.ac.uk or Dr. Rebeca Isabel García-Betances at rgarcia@lst.tfo.upm.es.
